Crime does not pay

AN INSPIRING story of transformation is what local craftsman and ex-convict Soloman Mletyane, 67, wants to share with youth who are tempted to take up a life of crime.

Mletyane was sentenced to 27 years in prison in Gauteng for armed robbery and attempted murder in 1973 when he was just 25 years old.

“I started my life of crime when I turned to dagga and began to rob houses in my early 20s. I did it so that I could get money to buy more drugs and get into night clubs,” he said.

He was labelled the ‘general of gangsters’ after a few years in prison and caused havoc during the first 20 years of his sentence. Continue reading
